Now the students are working on understanding the article. Each group will present about a page; first group on vocab and info about the author.
In a way the article is weak as a narrative; by extension the whole narrative project is called into question. On a personal note, all that narrative info I have used over the years now seems unimportant.
Depressing what we learn... even as teachers. I guess it goes back to Socrates who said, "The wise man is the one who knows what he does not know." To end on a more positive note, with another quote by Socrates, "The unexamined life is not the life for a person."

First assignment on Silko article...
I put the class in groups of four, which I plan on using as working groups for the whole semester. Right now they are reading the article, usually as a group aloud.
I also presented the Bb assignments and where they will post their blogs. I asked them to create a weblog on Blogger.com. On Monday we will see where they are with the assignment. This is the exciting part of the course for me; let's see what they come up with.
I am also looking forward to reading Fast Food Nation and using it as the main text of the class. We need to cover the reading and writing bases in this hybrid course.
How will it all turn out? Ask me at Christmas.

English 71... Begin blogging.
This is not a formal assignment; just an online tool to take the place of the old spiral notebook, or to go way back, the learning log.
You know this course requires four formal writing assignments; it also requires writing your own online journal--300 words a week--but also reading your classmates' blogs on a weekly basis.
Blogs emphasize in my mind anyway the playfulness of language, color, photos, visuals but unlike Fb always more words and reflection.
Good luck and remember to have fun. You don't have to use your real name and if you hate this assignment, you can destroy it at the end of the course. As Steven D. Krause once wrote (and it's his fault that I was introduced to blogs) "Nobody likes to write blogs." Blah!
